Cooking on Meno

The only cooking class on Gili Meno

Cooking on Meno is the only dedicated cooking class on Gili Meno — a hands-on session where you prepare traditional Indonesian dishes, eat what you make, and leave with recipes to cook at home.

Our purpose-built kitchen sits at Divine Divers on Sunset Beach on the northwest of the island. Whether you're a complete beginner or a keen home cook, our team guides groups of up to eight through each step. Classes run every day at 11:00 and 17:00.

The experience

Who comes to cook on Meno?

Cooking on Meno suits almost anyone curious about Indonesian food — you don't need kitchen confidence to enjoy it.

Couples and friends often book the afternoon slot after a slow morning on the beach. Families are welcome; kids usually love pounding spices and shaping klepon. Solo travellers join small groups and often leave with new dinner companions. Complete beginners are our most common guests — we demo each step and keep the pace relaxed.

If you've only eaten nasi goreng at a beach warung and want to understand the flavours behind it, this is the kind of unhurried, hands-on afternoon Meno does best.

Your island day

How to fit a class into your Meno plans

Gili Meno is built for slow days — no cars, no rush. A cooking class slots in easily whether you're here for two nights or a week.

Morning on the water, cook in the afternoon

Many guests snorkel or dive with Divine Divers in the morning, then join the 17:00 class and eat what they've made as the island cools down. Turtles, coral, then sambal — hard to beat.

Cook first, sunset after

The 11:00 class works well if you want the rest of the day free. Finishing around lunchtime leaves the afternoon for cycling the island, the saltwater lake, or a west-coast sunset.

Rainy season or too much sun?

The kitchen is covered and air-conditioned. It's one of the few indoor activities on an island that doesn't have many — and you still get a proper meal out of it.

You don't need to stay at Divine Divers to join — guests come from all over Meno, and some visit from Gili Air or Gili Trawangan for the day.

The island

Why take a cooking class on Gili Meno?

The Gili Islands are famous for beaches and snorkelling — but Meno is the quiet one. No nightlife strip, no traffic, just white sand, turquoise water, and a pace that lets you actually notice where you are.

A cooking class here isn't a detour from the island — it's a way into it. You work with spices and produce from Lombok and the Gilis, learn why a dish matters to local culture, and sit down with the people you cooked with. That's harder to get from a restaurant menu alone.

Meno has only one cooking class, which keeps groups small and the atmosphere personal. You leave with full recipes, not just photos — a souvenir that lasts longer than anything from the harbour shop.

Whether Meno is your base for the week or a day trip from Gili Trawangan or Gili Air, an afternoon in the kitchen is often the moment guests say they remember most.

"If you're visiting Gili Meno, this cooking class is an absolute must — truly one of the highlights of my entire trip. The setting is magical: beach, ocean, rustic wooden elements and a warm aesthetic that feels authentic and carefully curated. The staff welcomed us like family — kind, attentive, and passionate about sharing their culture. We left with recipe books full of dishes we can't wait to recreate. Don't hesitate — book it."
